Chocolate Chip Cookies that will make you famous
These chocolate chip cookies are so good that I have become famous for them. At every event where I bring them I'm known as "the lady who made the cookies." I make them for my family, students, friends, church potlucks, birthdays, and have even been asked to make them for weddings. My husband’s handball buddies love it when I bring them to tournaments, and a few years ago they gave me a trophy as the World's Best Cookie Maker.
I send them to my husband's cardiologist every time he has a checkup as a thank you for saving his life! A “big cookie” is the prize my students love best, but my favorite place to share these cookies is at my city’s rescue mission, OURM, with the families there whose goal is to get back on their feet and become independent again. It makes them feel loved that someone would take the time to bake homemade cookies for them, and that makes me happy!
Over the years I have tweaked the recipe and have come pretty close to perfection. I welcome you to share the love with others with a warm, soft, straight-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie! Let's get started...
Grandma Ceil’s Famous Chocolate Chip CookiesThis makes one batch of 3-4 dozen cookies, depending on size. I almost always make a double batch.
Ingredients
Instructions to make your own delicious chocolate chip cookiesI use a Kitchen Aid stand mixer that my husband gave me many years ago. Best gift ever! It has many miles on it, and it still works like a charm. But you can also use a hand mixer or even a big wooden spoon.
First, put the the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl and cream on high speed until light and fluffy (2 or 3 minutes, stopping a few times to scrape down the sides of the bowl). Add the egg, vanilla extract, baking soda, and salt, one at a time and beat until each ingredient is thoroughly blended.
Next, add flour a cup at a time and beat until blended. I like to use a paper plate to make it easier, a trick I learned from Alton Brown's Good Eats show. You want the dough to be stiff and not too soft.
Finally, stir in the chocolate chips. I like to use a LOT of them. Be sure they are semi-sweet, which I think has a better flavor than milk chocolate.
Drop by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet. I like to bake on parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, but you can lightly grease the cookie sheet instead.
Time to bake those cookies!Bake at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes, until they have just started to turn brown around the edges.
Don’t bake them too long, or they will be hard and crispy, not soft and chewy.
Your house is going to smell AMAZING! It always makes me think of Christmas time.
For crispy cookiesIf you like crispy cookies, use 2 ¼ cups of flour instead and bake a little longer.
Now for the hardest part...... waiting for them to cool down before taking a big, chocolately bite! Yummmmmmm.
Time to become famous for YOUR chocolate chip cookies!Once the cookies are cooled, store in an airtight container, take to your next event, and enjoy the oohs and ahhs as your friends see that YOU are now "the person who made the cookies." But be prepared to be asked to bring them to every event you attend! For myself, it makes me so happy when other people enjoy my baking, so I love being known as the cookie lady. And now you can ...
